COVID-19
COVID-19 is a viral infection of the airways and lungs caused by the coronavirus. It spreads through droplets and air when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks. Most people have a mild illness and recover at home, but older people and those with diabetes, heart, lung or kidney disease can become seriously ill.
Symptoms
- Fever or chills
- Cough
- Sore throat and runny nose
- Tiredness and body aches
- Headache
- Loss of taste or smell
- Shortness of breath in more serious cases
Causes
- SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus
- Breathing in droplets from an infected person
- Being in crowded, closed rooms with poor air flow
- Touching the face after touching contaminated hands or surfaces
Prevention
- COVID-19 vaccine, especially for older people and those with long-term illness
- Wash hands often with soap and water
- Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing
- Open windows to let fresh air in
- Stay home when sick and wear a mask around older or sick people
Treatment
- Most people recover at home with rest and plenty of fluids
- Paracetamol for fever and pain
- Stay away from others until the fever has gone
- People at high risk may need antiviral medicine early, prescribed by a doctor
- Antibiotics do not work against the virus
- Do not start antibiotics or other prescription medicines without a doctor
Common questions
Do antibiotics help COVID-19?
No. COVID-19 is caused by a virus, and antibiotics do not kill viruses. A doctor may give antibiotics only if a bacterial infection develops as well.
How long should I stay away from others?
Stay at home while you have a fever or feel unwell, and for at least one day after the fever has gone without medicine. Wear a mask near older or sick people for a few more days.
